Mexico's lower house backs higher fees for foreign visitors in 2027
Mexico's Chamber of Deputies approved a 2027 federal fees bill in general on October 13, but members were still discussing changes to it.
The bill raises charges for services including immigration, environmental permits and health licences.
The fee for foreign tourists entering Mexico would rise from 983 pesos to 1,158 pesos, below the original proposal of 1,334.80 pesos.
The tourist fee would increase by about 18% from its current level.
The money collected would be divided among Mexico's Defence Ministry, the National Migration Institute and the federal treasury.
The bill also removes entrance fees at 53 museums, monuments and archaeological sites, and provides for free entry on Sundays to certain protected areas for specified visitors.
The bill still needs further debate and a final vote in the lower house.
Mexico’s lower house approved the Federal Law of Rights for 2027 in general, including a higher fee for foreign visitors entering for tourism.
The vote was 329 in favor and 117 against, and the bill was still due for discussion and a vote on specific provisions.
The visitor fee was set to rise from 983 pesos to 1,158 pesos, after lawmakers reduced an originally proposed increase of 35%.
Under the approved plan, 57% of revenue from the fee would go to the Defense Ministry, 15% to the National Migration Institute and 28% to the federal treasury.

In the first place, the increase in the initiative on the fee paid by foreign visitors entering our country for tourism was reduced.
Mexico is becoming more expensive for tourists, visitors and travelers, which will end up affecting Mexico’s tourist destinations and the tourism and business industry in those areas.
The most worrying case we have identified is the excessive increases in the health sector charged by Cofepris.
