South Korean provincial councilor protests lawmaker’s audit role

People Power Party provincial councilor Heo Ji-hoon protested Yong Hye-in’s audit role outside the Gyeongsangbuk-do provincial government office.

Yong, a lawmaker from the Basic Income Party, was due to take part in the National Assembly’s audit of the province.

Heo said Yong had been reported for an alleged violation of the Political Funds Act and argued that someone under investigation should not audit a government body.

He also said Yong lacked enough understanding of the region and urged her to leave the audit committee.

The protest was Heo’s own position; the account does not establish whether Yong committed an offence.

Yong attended the audit at the provincial office that day, and no further action was reported.
