Fire at government storage warehouse in Bleiswijk sends smoke over nearby homes

A large fire broke out at a government storage warehouse in Bleiswijk, in the Netherlands, on Sunday afternoon.

The warehouse belongs to Domeinen Roerende Zaken, a Finance Ministry service that sells seized goods such as cars, scooters and boats at auction.

It is not yet clear what was stored inside the building on Overbuurtseweg.

The fire sent heavy smoke towards a nearby residential area, and residents were told to close windows and doors and switch off mechanical ventilation.

An emergency alert warned residents about the smoke, while the N209 was closed in both directions near Bleiswijk.

Fire crews paused their firefighting around 1 p.m.

as the smoke eased and they discussed a plan; they want to find out what is in the warehouse before deciding what to do next.
