AI regulation fears drive sharp global tech stock sell-off

Democrats’ control of both chambers of Congress raised fears of tighter AI rules after the US midterm elections.

Those concerns prompted investors to sell shares in companies tied to AI, including semiconductor and power infrastructure firms.

South Korea’s Kospi fell 5.28%, and the Nasdaq dropped 5.52% on November 5.

The Nasdaq closed more than 10% below its record high, a level commonly described as a technical correction.

Analysts said the market may be overestimating the risk, because Democrats face limits on how much policy they can change.

Investors also shifted money between industries, while oil prices rebounded after a steep fall the previous day.

The US jobs report due on November 6 could bring further market swings.
