TCU minister warns Brazil may struggle to pay future pensions

Augusto Nardes, a minister at Brazil’s Federal Court of Accounts, warned the country may struggle to pay pensions in the future.

He cited a pension deficit of more than 404 billion reais and said spending outside the budget had reached 326 billion reais.

Those figures are Nardes’s claims about Brazil’s public finances, not an independent assessment in the available information.

He said the spending could weaken the economy and make it harder for Brazil to attract international investors.

Nardes compared the current situation with the 2015 “fiscal pedal” controversy under former president Dilma Rousseff, when he was the court’s lead reviewer of government accounting practices.

He said manipulation of public accounts had returned.

Nardes plans to retire from the court at the end of 2026, but no further government action or timeline is given.
