Dr Shriram Nene describes weight-loss diets and his vegan experience
Dr Shriram Nene has tried several diets while looking for an approach that suited him.
Nene, a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon and the husband of actor Madhuri Dixit, spoke about his experiences at a session at Masters’ Union University.
He said he followed a calorie-restricted plan with intermittent fasting, protein shakes and frequent workouts for two months.
An Atkins diet helped him lose substantial weight, after a patient challenged him to try it with her; she also lost weight and later had heart valve surgery.
Nene said he stopped the high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet after experiencing severe muscle cramps and struggling to climb stairs.
His vegan diet relied on plant-based protein, including pea protein shakes, tofu, edamame and kidney beans, and he joked that it made him very gassy.
He did not describe a next step or say which diet he follows now.

What people are saying
I lost a ridiculous amount of weight. I went down to 158 pounds
Since it’s a very high protein diet, I could eat anything with high fat as well, as long as I kept the carbs low. But I was getting horrible muscle cramps, too. I was struggling even to climb up stairs
As a vegan, you don’t get enough protein. I was on three pea protein shakes a day, 30 g each.
I was like a gas bomb after a while.
