Istanbul suspends in-person schooling for one day because of heavy rain

Istanbul has suspended in-person classes for one day on Thursday, October 15, because of severe weather.

The decision covers all public and private education institutions across the city.

Heavy rain has flooded some homes, businesses, roads, underpasses and tunnels, and left some vehicles stranded.

Forecasters warned of thunderstorms and very heavy rain in parts of the city, with risks including flooding, lightning and travel disruption.

The measures are intended to reduce the impact of the bad weather on daily life.

Motorcycle and similar two-wheeled vehicles have been banned from the roads from Wednesday evening until further notice.

Some public employees, including people with disabilities and pregnant staff, are also being given administrative leave, with exceptions for certain essential services.
