Inquest opens into Toronto woman’s 2020 death during police response

A 14-day coroner’s inquest has begun into the 2020 death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, a 29-year-old Toronto woman.

Police had responded to calls about a family dispute at her apartment, and she died after falling from a high-rise balcony.

Ontario’s police watchdog found she was trying to move from her balcony to an adjacent one and cleared Toronto officers of wrongdoing.

Her death drew attention to police interactions with people in mental health crises and came amid protests following George Floyd’s killing.

The inquest jury cannot assign criminal responsibility, but it may recommend ways to prevent similar deaths.

Fifteen witnesses are expected to testify, and the inquest is scheduled to last 14 days.

Korchinski-Paquet’s parents and advocates are calling for inquest recommendations to be binding and implemented.
