Greenland lawmakers approve security deal with US and Denmark
Greenland’s parliament approved a security agreement with the United States and Denmark on Tuesday, voting 16-0, with seven abstentions.
Greenland is a self-governing island under Danish control, and US President Donald Trump has repeatedly called for it to become part of the United States.
The agreement expands the US military role in Greenland and paves the way for two new bases and a missile defence system.
It also reaffirms Danish sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to shape their own future.
The deal aims to strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic while easing tensions over Trump’s demands.
Denmark’s parliament must still consider and approve the agreement before it can take effect; its readings and vote are scheduled for later this month.
