More than 26,500 runners set for Valencia half marathon

More than 26,500 runners are set to take part in the Valencia half marathon, which starts Sunday at 8:25 a.m.

from Avenida dels Tarongers.

The race brings athletes from 128 countries to the Spanish city, while 41% of entrants are from the Valencian Community.

High demand meant many runners got their places through a lottery for the first time.

Elite athletes are targeting fast times, and Spanish runners Carla Gallardo and Rodri Kwizera could challenge national records.

Conditions are expected to be dry, but temperatures may pass 20°C after 10 a.m., with wind possibly troublesome in some sections.

The event is expected to boost tourism and the local economy, and organizers have also arranged aid for athletics clubs whose equipment was damaged by recent flooding.
