Switzerland releases more aviation fuel from its emergency reserve

Switzerland has released another 50 million litres of aviation fuel from its national emergency reserve.

The release follows 30 million litres made available in mid-October, and together the withdrawals amount to 17.4% of the reserve.

The government cited refinery problems in southern France and Germany, as well as disrupted freight trains.

The fuel shortage affects airlines including Swiss, which is part of Germany-based Lufthansa Group and operates a major hub in Zurich.

The reserve now covers about 70 days of supply, below the required 90 days, according to the report.

The official who authorized the releases can act alone until 20% of the reserve has been used; about 12 million litres remain before that limit.

After that, Switzerland's economic affairs department must decide whether to release more fuel.
