Former Palestinian detainees face repeated arrests in the occupied West Bank

Former Palestinian detainees in the occupied West Bank face repeated arrests and questioning by Israeli forces after leaving prison.

Ahmed Abed, a 43-year-old Palestinian, was released in January 2025 as part of a prisoner exchange between Hamas and Israel after serving 22 years of a life sentence.

Since his release, he has been arrested six times and summoned for questioning five times, and says soldiers have raided his home each time.

He says the detentions involve threats, beatings and poor conditions, and that an officer warned him he could be arrested for going to a mosque.

The repeated raids and threats have left his family afraid and disrupted his daily life, while employers have refused to hire him because of his arrests.

Other released Palestinians in the West Bank are described as facing similar treatment, including home raids and short detentions.

The account describes no change or next step, while Abed remains at risk of being detained again.
