South Korean engineer named ITER deputy director-general

South Korean engineer Jung Cheon-young was appointed an ITER deputy director-general for a five-year term.

ITER is an experimental fusion facility being built and operated jointly by South Korea, the United States, the European Union, Russia, Japan, China and India.

Jung will lead engineering services, including support for construction and integration of the facility’s equipment.

He joined ITER in 2013 as a quality-control engineer and later led its quality-control team and department.

He is the fourth South Korean to hold the role, and the first in 11 years.

ITER is moving toward assembling and testing key equipment, and Jung said he would focus on engineering and quality assurance to help complete the project.

The work is intended to advance fusion energy, which could contribute to future clean-energy independence.
