Man Fined 5 Million Won for Threatening Debtor’s Mother

A South Korean court fined a man 5 million won for threatening a borrower’s mother over an unpaid debt owed to his nephew.

The man, who is in his 40s, was found guilty of violating the law on fair debt collection.

He visited the woman’s shop in Ansan three times in July last year and demanded that she repay the money.

She was not legally responsible for the debt, which her son had borrowed from the man’s nephew.

The man threatened to damage the shop and hold a protest, and he went with three acquaintances who threatened her over the possibility that the borrower might die by suicide.

The court said his threats caused fear and disrupted her work and private life, and also noted his previous convictions for other offences.

The fine was imposed after he was tried without being held in custody.
