Oil prices fall about 9% as US midterms raise hopes of Iran war exit

Oil prices dropped about 9% after the US midterm elections, with Brent crude falling to around $94 a barrel.

Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, weakening President Donald Trump’s position for the rest of his term.

The United States and Israel are at war with Iran, and disruption to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz has made supplies more costly and uncertain.

Investors saw the election result as a reason the war could end sooner, which helped push prices down.

But Trump could also escalate military action, and some analysts warned that a wider conflict could disrupt supplies further.

A deal with Iran could restore oil flows and lower costs for importers such as India.

Markets will watch for US and Iranian moves next, but the countries remain far from an agreement, according to an Iranian official.
