Ningxia issues trial guide to improve the look of rural villages

Ningxia has issued a trial guide for improving rural village landscapes across the region in northwestern China.

The guide sets out a three-level approach, from broad regional planning to village layouts and individual buildings.

It gives separate directions for four types of village, including those targeted for growth, those with cultural heritage to protect, those blending with nearby cities and those facing relocation or consolidation.

The guidance reflects differences between Ningxia’s north, central and southern areas, including their landscapes, local cultures and industries.

It covers village layouts, roads, public spaces, infrastructure, greenery and building design.

The aim is to improve village environments while protecting local character and avoiding unnecessary investment in villages set to be consolidated.

Local authorities can use illustrated guidance and lists of recommended and discouraged practices to shape improvements to local conditions.
