Brazil’s Senate leadership vote could shape pressure on the Supreme Court

Lula’s re-election and Flávio Bolsonaro’s defeat have eased some Supreme Court justices’ concerns about political pressure in Brazil.

The justices remain cautious because the court has faced criticism and impeachment threats from Bolsonaro supporters.

The Senate president can decide whether to open impeachment proceedings against a Supreme Court justice, and conviction requires 54 of the 81 senators.

A Senate leadership vote in February 2027 will therefore be closely watched by the court.

Current Senate president Davi Alcolumbre opposes pressure to remove justices and has support from some government allies and centrist parties, but Rogério Marinho and Tereza Cristina are also contenders.

The secret ballot will decide who leads the Senate, while the Supreme Court is expected to remain a focus of political tension as it handles disputes between the government and Congress.
