Mexico lawmakers consider reviewing electoral chief’s appointment powers
Mexico’s ruling-party lawmakers may review powers given to electoral chief Guadalupe Taddei after allegations of corruption involving contractors.
The powers let Taddei appoint heads of technical units and executive departments without approval from the National Electoral Institute’s council.
They were granted after council members had blocked appointments, according to lawmaker Sergio Gutiérrez Luna.
In February 2025, Taddei used the powers to appoint a transparency official who, the article says, lacked experience in that field.
Ricardo Monreal said lawmakers will discuss reviewing the powers with his party and other groups, but did not call for Taddei’s removal or say she was guilty.
He said oversight and investigative bodies, including the electoral institute’s internal control office, should clarify the allegations.
Any review would aim to limit excessive powers, while investigations are needed to establish whether laws were broken.

Chamber of Deputies political coordination chief Ricardo Monreal said a review was acceptable and that Morena would not protect anyone found to have broken the law.

The discussion follows recent allegations of corruption involving Taddei and contractors.
Monreal said the allegations should be clarified by oversight and investigative bodies, not by him.

What people are saying
it is acceptable that we seriously review not granting exorbitant powers to any collegiate body
We are not going to protect anyone; we are not a cover for anyone
The power to appoint, whether by an individual or a collective body, is not in itself improper
