Five Indonesian Mining Permits Said to Hold $300 Billion in Gold and Copper

Indonesia's president was told five mining permits hold reserves valued at Rp 5,400 trillion, or about $300 billion.

Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said the deposits involve gold and copper.

The permits are in West Nusa Tenggara, Papua and other areas that Bahlil did not name.

President Prabowo Subianto described the reserves as proven, based on reserve studies, and said mining was still to come.

He said some Indonesian mining permits have not been used well, and called for stricter checks on future permits.

Officials are now preparing to examine the mineral potential covered by the five permits, but no timeline was given.
