About 90% of South Korea’s corporate tax increase came from the capital region

Companies in South Korea’s capital region accounted for about 90% of the corporate tax increase over five years.

The figures show that between 2020 and 2022, total corporate tax rose 34.7% nationwide.

Tax paid by capital-region companies rose 41.7%, while tax paid by companies elsewhere rose 14.3%.

Seoul-based firms made up 29.1% of companies in the latest figures cited.

Yet those firms paid 52.8% of all corporate tax, showing how strongly tax payments are concentrated in the capital.

The figures highlight a large gap between the capital region and the rest of the country, but no next step is stated.
