Indonesia reviews transmigration land and agrarian conflicts
Indonesia’s agrarian reform agency met the Transmigration Ministry in Jakarta to discuss land management, disputes and support for communities.
The ministry says transmigration land covers about 3.1 million hectares, with around 2.7 million hectares already given to communities.
Some remaining land needs its legal status and administration clarified, while officials also discussed overlapping claims in Natuna and land occupied by residents.
They want land planning to create new centres of economic growth, not only provide people with homes or plots.
Agency head Dedi Prasetyo said communities also need business advice, financing, seeds, infrastructure and market access to use land productively.
The agency, the Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning Ministry and the Land Bank have identified about 22,000 hectares of potential agrarian reform land, which still needs verification.
Officials plan to coordinate across agencies on land status, mapping and possible arrangements under the law.

What people are saying
The agency does not only talk about access to and ownership of land. What is far more important is how people are empowered, able to manage land productively, and obtain sustainable economic benefits. Land must become a source of livelihood and prosperity for the people.
People should not obtain access to land but lack the support to manage it. We must build an economic ecosystem that connects land arrangements with productive activities, so people can grow, become self-reliant, and prosper.
