Home-built robots draw diners to a Karachi restaurant

Two robots serve diners at The Sicilian in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city.

Engineer Syed Osama Aziz built Robia and Jojo through his robotics company, using mostly locally made parts and some imported electronics.

The robots carry food to tables, but customers must take it from the tray themselves or wait for a human staff member to help.

Robots are more common in restaurants in China and other parts of East Asia, but they remain unusual in Pakistan.

Their novelty is drawing families and curious visitors, and restaurant staff say customer numbers have grown.

Aziz hopes to add camera and image-processing features so the robots can recognize customers, recall past orders and suggest food.
