Spain’s annual inflation reaches 4.9% as fuel and food prices rise

Spain’s annual inflation rose to 4.9%, its highest level since February 2023.

The increase is adding to household costs, including everyday shopping.

Fuel prices climbed amid the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, with petrol reaching an average of €1.935 per litre and diesel €1.931.

Fresh fish has also become more expensive: hake now averages €16.20 per kilo, up €3.60 since March, while sea bream and sea bass have also risen in price.

Oranges cost 25% more, averaging €2.34 per kilo; the account links much of Spain’s supply to Argentina and South Africa.

Shellfish and tomatoes have risen too: a 63-gram tin of cockles generally costs more than €5, and tomatoes increased from €4.84 to €5.26 per kilo in recent months.

The price increases are linked in part to global geopolitical conditions, but no further steps or timeline are given.
