South Korea's People Power Party proposes six-member housing talks
South Korea's People Power Party proposed six-member housing talks with the governing Democratic Party.
The proposed group would include three representatives from each party, including policy and land-transport committee officials.
It would discuss housing supply and rental stability, including legal and policy measures.
The parties disagree over a proposed floor-area ratio benefit for private redevelopment and reconstruction, which the Democratic Party would limit to homes of 60 square metres or less, according to the People Power Party.
The opposition says broader redevelopment reforms are needed, including changes to the levy on reconstruction gains and easing lending rules.
It also wants the talks to address rental stability, and is awaiting the Democratic Party's response.
South Korea’s People Power Party proposed a six-member bipartisan body to discuss housing supply and measures to stabilise rents.
The party asked the Democratic Party to join the proposed “3+3 real estate consultative body.”
The proposed members are the parties’ policy committee chairs, senior floor policy officials and Land and Transport Committee floor leaders.
People Power Party policy committee chair Im I-ja said the talks should cover housing supply, rental stability and rules affecting redevelopment and reconstruction.
Im criticised the Democratic Party’s position that floor-area-ratio benefits for private redevelopment and reconstruction should apply only to small homes of 60 square metres or less.

What people are saying
Let us jointly prepare effective housing supply policies and legal and institutional measures to stabilise rents.
If they appear to relax regulations on the surface but impose various restrictions and shackles behind the scenes, it will not be effective in the market.
Cosmetic easing will not improve the viability of redevelopment projects and will only cause us to miss the golden time for urban housing supply.
I expect a positive response from the Democratic Party.
