Giovannini urges Italy to put young people at the centre of policy
Enrico Giovannini is urging Italy to turn concern for young people into action on the issues shaping their future.
Giovannini, an economist and former minister, is scientific director of the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development, known as ASviS.
In 2025, ASviS launched Ecosistema Futuro, including a group of 40 people under 35 working with 12 mentors on plans for a National Assembly on the Future.
Italy’s Constitution was amended in 2022 to protect the environment, biodiversity and ecosystems in the interests of future generations.
A law passed in November 2025 requires new laws to be assessed for their effects on young and future generations, including social and environmental impacts.
The decree to put that requirement into effect is still awaited, and Giovannini says it should help ensure laws promote fairness between generations.
