At least 68 killed in collision on Spain’s Madrid-Seville rail line

A Renfe train hit a stopped Iryo train near Urda in Toledo, on Spain’s Madrid-Seville high-speed line.

At least 68 people were killed and more than 70 injured, according to a provisional toll.

The collision happened after a failure disabled the LZB signalling system across part of the line, automatically stopping trains in the area.

Adif’s control centre in Atocha took over traffic management, then allowed the Renfe train to resume its journey while the Iryo train remained stopped and a signal was red.

Without LZB, rules require trains to proceed cautiously at no more than 40 kilometres per hour, and Transport Minister Óscar Puente said another driver had to correct a similar instruction that morning.

Investigators must establish why the train continued before the crash, the second major accident on the line in nine months.
