Democrats win governorships in Texas, Georgia and other Republican-led states

Democrats won governor’s races in Texas, Georgia, Iowa and Ohio in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

The victories came in states where Republicans had controlled state government for years, including Texas, where Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Greg Abbott.

Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor in the United States with her win in Georgia.

The results give Democrats at least 27 of the country’s 50 governorships in 2027, their first majority in two decades.

More Democratic governors could make it easier for states to challenge or resist President Donald Trump’s policies.

Trump’s administration has clashed with states over immigration, National Guard deployments, federal aid and election rules.

The new governors take office in 2027, when they can begin shaping how their states respond to the administration.
