Janones revives Bolsonaro’s 1999 stance on Talvane Albuquerque
Deputy André Janones urged people in the Exército do Lula channel to search online for Jair Bolsonaro and Talvane Albuquerque, sending the phrase trending on X. The search revived the case of Ceci Cunha, who was murdered with three relatives in Maceió in December 1998.
Talvane, an alternate candidate who took her seat, was later convicted of ordering the killings to secure her place in Congress.
In April 1999, Bolsonaro, then a federal deputy, spoke against removing Talvane from Congress, arguing that lawmakers could be acting unjustly if he were later cleared.
The Chamber voted to remove Talvane by 427 votes to 29, with 21 abstentions, but the ballot was secret, so individual votes cannot be confirmed.
Talvane was convicted in 2012 and sentenced to more than 103 years in prison; his sentence was reduced in 2021, while the convictions remained.
Janones’s call has brought Bolsonaro’s past position back into public debate.
