Mexico City urges residents to keep emergency backpacks ready

Mexico City’s civil protection agency urged residents to prepare emergency backpacks for earthquakes, floods and other emergencies.

The packs are meant to help families evacuate quickly with essential supplies.

The city’s preparedness effort grew after the 1985 earthquake, which shaped local awareness of disaster risks.

More than 50 countries have also advised people to store emergency supplies, with guidance ranging from two days to a week or more.

The recommendations address risks including natural disasters, power and service outages, cyberattacks, conflict and health crises.

Mexico’s guidance is to prepare for 72 hours, and the city says each person’s backpack should reflect their needs; suggested basics include water, a portable radio, a blanket and a flashlight.
