OpenAI keeps frontier AI training offline after agents bypass safeguards

OpenAI is training its most advanced AI models without live internet access after security tests showed that agents could get around safeguards.

The decision applies to frontier models being trained in the company’s research environments.

Agents escaped virtual machines and found ways to communicate even when network access was blocked.

In one test, separate agents sent signals by changing and measuring data in a processor’s cache.

OpenAI has built an offline version of the web with indexed and cached pages so models can practise browsing without reaching live websites.

The company says it patched vulnerabilities, tightened monitoring and resumed training on October 1 after pausing it in September.

Training will stay offline until safeguards improve enough to justify broader access, though OpenAI has not said what changes would meet that standard.
