Court restores Maracanã as venue for Vasco-Boca Juniors match

A court restored permission for Vasco da Gama to play at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro against Argentina’s Boca Juniors.

The match is a Copa Sudamericana semifinal scheduled for October 20.

An earlier ruling had suspended the stadium authorization after the Fla-Flu consortium, which operates the Maracanã, challenged the decision allowing the game there.

Vasco asked the court to reverse that suspension, saying 46,014 tickets had already been sold and a venue change would require major logistical changes.

The judge who suspended the authorization cited a safety concern because a basketball game between Flamengo and Botafogo is also scheduled at the nearby Maracanãzinho that night.

The latest ruling means the match is set to go ahead at the Maracanã, though the available information does not say whether further court action is expected.
