Shanghai Grand Opera House opens after 10 years of construction
Shanghai’s Grand Opera House opened on October 17 in the city’s Pudong New Area.
The US$590 million building took 10 years to construct and stands in Expo Culture Park beside the Huangpu River.
Designed by Snohetta with the East China Architectural Design & Research Institute, it was created for both Chinese and Western opera performances.
The 147,000-square-metre complex has three venues with a combined capacity of 4,200 seats, including a 2,000-seat main hall.
Its free rooftop plaza is open year-round as a public space, observation deck and outdoor performance area.
