The incident happened in the ninth race, when the favourite, ridden by Tatsuya Nakajima, lost its balance at the final turn and fell.

Three jockeys were injured and taken to hospital, while officials said all were conscious and their injuries were not life-threatening.

A fourth jockey, Kenshin Uozumi, also fell but later rode in two more races.

The race resumed about 50 minutes after the accident.
