Experts recommend support and nicotine treatments for quitting smoking

France’s No Tobacco Month began on November 1, inviting people to try going 30 days without cigarettes.

Psychiatrist and addiction specialist Romain Icick says quitting can cause nicotine withdrawal that may need treatment, depending on a person’s smoking history and habits.

Options include gum, lozenges, sprays and patches, which can be tailored to individual needs.

Patches may also help reduce cravings beyond the first seven to 15 days of withdrawal.

People can seek guidance from a doctor or use personalised support through Tabac Info Service, including its mobile app.

Icick says a reason to quit that feels personally important can help someone maintain the decision.

Telling family and friends can help them understand the addiction and offer support, including if the person becomes anxious or irritable.
