New Party leads Erdoğan’s AKP by 2.4 points in September poll

Turkey’s New Party led the AKP by 2.4 points in a September opinion poll.

The party was founded in July by Özgür Özel after a court removed him as leader of the Republican People’s Party, and he and 90 lawmakers left that party.

The poll put New Party support at 30.64 percent, compared with 28.24 percent for the AKP, after accounting for undecided voters and protest votes.

Before those responses were redistributed, the New Party had 23.69 percent and the AKP 21.84 percent.

The result reversed the AKP’s narrow August lead, although the poll is a snapshot and does not determine an election result.

Turkey’s next parliamentary and presidential elections are scheduled for 2028, so the poll offers an early measure of party support ahead of those contests.
