Copppal urges institutional overhaul of Mexico’s electoral institute

Copppal’s election observatory called for changes to Mexico’s National Electoral Institute, known as the INE, citing corruption and institutional problems.

It urged the Organization of American States to help Mexican authorities restore the institute and rebuild public confidence.

The observatory’s director, Sebastián Hagobian, said the problems could weaken the legitimacy of Mexico’s June 6, 2027 election.

The INE has historically been regarded as an important, trusted body that helped support Mexico’s peaceful democratic transition.

The observatory says corruption has damaged the INE’s credibility, professional structure and autonomy.

It also called for political forces to agree on a new institutional design and select a new INE president with an unblemished record.

The proposed OAS support is intended to help prepare the institute for 2027, but the account does not say whether Mexican authorities or the OAS have agreed to act.
