Emiliano Zapata police chief detained in Tabasco

Emiliano Zapata police chief detained in Tabasco

Tabasco authorities detained Cleofas Juárez Lara, the public security chief of Emiliano Zapata, a municipality in the state.

Prosecutors preliminarily attribute drug dealing, bribery and threats to him, but said the information could change as the investigation continues.

His detention came during searches authorized by a judge, not under an arrest warrant, according to the state prosecutor.

The prosecutor said the operation involved the Olmeca Tactical Reaction Interinstitutional Force and was part of its regular work, not the Enjambre operation.

Emiliano Zapata’s municipal council named Luis Fernando Cruz Azañón as interim security chief after confirming Juárez Lara’s detention.

The state prosecutor’s office said it would share updates as the investigation advances; it also said there was no open investigation against the town’s mayor.
