1988 Constituent Assembly members launch petition defending Brazil's Constitution

Twenty members of Brazil's 1988 Constituent Assembly launched a letter and petition defending Brazil's Constitution and democracy.

The petition is on Change.org and is open to the public.

The signatories say they are concerned about proposed constitutional changes backed by presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro and political groups associated with the military dictatorship.

They also criticize former supporters of Brazil's return to democracy for backing groups linked to the former regime.

The letter repeats warnings by assembly president Ulysses Guimarães that betraying the Constitution means betraying the country and that its survival is tied to democracy.

The campaign was organized by former federal deputy Hermes Zaneti, who represented Rio Grande do Sul in the assembly and authored an amendment granting optional voting rights to 16- and 17-year-olds.

The petition remains open and more assembly members are still signing the letter.
