Bus carrying 12 people crashes into a ditch in northern France

A bus carrying 12 people, including children, left the road and landed in a ditch in Escaudain, in northern France, on 28 October.

The crash happened on Avenue Jules Guesde, between Douai and Valenciennes, and no other vehicle was involved.

Reports differ on the toll: one says nine people were injured, while another says 11 had minor injuries and one was more seriously hurt.

The seriously injured person was taken to hospital, and one report said their life was in danger.

The driver reportedly told police he had fallen asleep, while tests for alcohol and drugs were negative.

An investigation into the crash is under way, and the bus has been impounded as investigators examine what happened.
