Ubiquiti switch extends Power over Ethernet to 800 meters
Ubiquiti has announced an eight-port switch that can send Power over Ethernet, or PoE, over distances of up to 800 meters.
PoE carries both electricity and data over a network cable, but the available power and data speed fall as the cable gets longer.
At 800 meters, a connected device can draw no more than 13 watts, using Ubiquiti's specified outdoor cable.
The switch requires special cables and a compatible endpoint, and its long-range connections are not suited to devices that need high data speeds.
Data speeds are usually 100 megabits per second up to 400 meters, then drop to 10 megabits per second beyond that.
The switch costs $274, and each endpoint costs $99, with cables adding to the total; the setup could help where installing separate power cables is difficult.
Ubiquiti has announced the USW-LR-Switch-8-PoE (630W), a switch designed to deliver Power over Ethernet over distances of up to 800 meters.
At that maximum distance, a connected device can use no more than 13 watts with Ubiquiti’s official outdoor cable.
Long-range ports are limited to 100 Mbit/s up to 400 meters and 10 Mbit/s beyond that.
The eight-port switch has one uplink port, which can use either RJ45 or SFP at up to 1 Gbit/s.
The switch costs $274, while each compatible long-range endpoint costs $99.
