Verastem reports early results for experimental cancer drug

Verastem Oncology reported early results for its experimental drug, VS-7375, from a small study.

The study included people with metastatic pancreatic and colorectal cancers and advanced non-small cell lung cancer.

The drug targets KRAS G12D, a common cancer-driving mutation, and is designed to bind to two states of the mutation.

Tumor response rates ranged from 36% to 50% in pancreatic cancer, and were 33% in colorectal cancer and 43% in lung cancer.

The results give Verastem an early position in a crowded field, where Revolution Medicines has an approved drug for pancreatic cancer and is also developing a G12D treatment.

Larger trials are needed to show whether VS-7375 works, and Verastem says a Phase 3 pancreatic cancer trial will begin by the end of the year.

It expects to enroll the first patients in Phase 3 trials for colorectal and lung cancer in the first half of next year.
