Indonesia’s Human Rights Commission Urges Police to Handle Protests Professionally

Indonesia’s human rights commission urged police to handle demonstrations more professionally after reviewing police conduct at rallies.

Commission chair Anis Hidayah said its findings included fatalities and children mobilized at demonstrations.

She also said police were suspected of failing to use juvenile justice procedures for vulnerable people affected by protests, leaving some facing criminal charges.

Komnas HAM received 2,088 complaints about police conduct between 2023 and mid-2026.

About 65 percent concerned unprofessional law enforcement; 1,355 complaints related to police performance, while others involved delays in handling legal cases.

Hidayah said the new police chief should review the findings, but no specific response or next step was announced.
