Tom Brady Says Some Roughing-the-Passer Calls Are Too Strict

Tom Brady questioned several penalty calls during Sunday's Green Bay Packers-Detroit Lions game.

The former quarterback, now a broadcaster, said defenders need room to play aggressively when trying to reach the quarterback.

He said quarterbacks also share responsibility, because holding the ball longer can make them more likely to be hit.

Brady singled out a penalty on Green Bay's Karl Brooks for hitting Detroit quarterback Jared Goff just after he threw the ball.

Brady and rules analyst Dean Blandino said the hit was not late, though officials called roughing the passer.

The penalty helped Detroit reach field-goal range, and the Lions won with a kick as time expired.

Brady acknowledged that it is easier to criticize the calls from the broadcast booth now that he is retired.
