India’s food regulator questions Nestlé and Zydus product claims
India’s food regulator, FSSAI, has questioned claims by Nestlé India and Zydus Wellness about their products.
The notices concern Nestlé’s Lactogen Pro 1 and Nan Excella Pro Stage 1 infant formulas, and Zydus’s Complan.
FSSAI said the formula claim that five HMOs support a normal immune system could imply a health benefit that is restricted under regulations.
It also asked Nestlé for scientific evidence that whey protein in the formula is easy to digest.
For Complan, the regulator sought evidence for claims about faster height growth, concentration and memory, and immunity.
Both companies say they have sent responses: Nestlé said it submitted a detailed reply, while Zydus said its claims were supported by scientific evidence and that it would cooperate.
FSSAI may consider action under food safety rules, but the sources do not say what decision it will make next.
