Chilli Beans seeks to renegotiate R$340 million in debt
Brazilian eyewear chain Chilli Beans is seeking to renegotiate R$340 million in debt through an out-of-court restructuring process.
The company, founded by Caito Maia, has reached an agreement with key lenders Itaú, Akron Capital and Vega Asset.
It expects up to R$50 million in new funding to help finance the restructuring and support growth.
The plan would change the repayment terms for debts owed to financial institutions, but the company has not disclosed the details.
Suppliers, employees and other partners are not included in the process.
High interest rates and missed payments by franchisees contributed to the debt, Maia said; he said franchisee non-payment has since fallen from about 22% to around 4%.
The company plans to focus on efficiency while pursuing growth in Brazil and abroad, and the agreement will later go to court for approval.

What people are saying
The first was the brutal increase in interest rates, which affected franchisees and also made the company's debt more expensive.
The second was the jump in defaults by part of the franchise network, which rose from a historical level close to 3% to about 22% in the post-pandemic period.
This has been a challenging period for Brazilian retail.
I am always optimistic about Chilli Beans, but next year will be a period with much more focus on quality and efficiency than quantity, especially during periods of such high interest rates.
