Türkiye says Sakarya gas field expansion will cut imports from 2027

Türkiye is expanding production at the Sakarya gas field in the Black Sea, where its first phase is already producing gas.

Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar says current output is about 9.5 to 10 million cubic metres a day, enough for around four million homes.

A new offshore platform is being connected to the field’s wells and will process gas before sending it by pipeline to shore.

Bayraktar says the expansion is expected to double daily output to 20 million cubic metres from 2027, supplying gas to around eight million homes and reducing imports.

He estimates domestic production could keep about $3.5 billion a year in Türkiye rather than spending it on imported gas.

A second platform is planned to arrive in early 2028, with a further increase in production that the minister says could bring domestic gas to three in four homes.

Türkiye has also begun exploring for shale gas and shale oil in Batman and Diyarbakır.

We will process the gas at this facility and then pump it through pipes from the seabed to Filyos, a distance of 170 kilometres.
