Trump’s election setback raises concerns over foreign policy shifts
Democrats will control both chambers of Congress when the new Congress begins work on January 3, 2027, after the midterm elections.
Former US diplomat Charles Freeman said Trump may now pursue closer ties with Russia without worrying as much about electoral consequences, despite likely opposition from Democrats and some Republicans.
Japanese media warned that Trump could seek deals with North Korea, China or Russia, countries whose relations with Japan are strained.
Japan’s main concern is being left out of US negotiations, including possible talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on nuclear and missile issues.
The sources also raise the possibility of renewed US attacks on Iran, increased pressure on trade partners through tariffs, and demands for Japan to spend more on defense.
Japan’s government stressed that close US-Japan cooperation remains essential and said it wants to deepen ties at every level.
