Italy’s next election may be held in May 2027

Italy’s next parliamentary election could be held in May 2027, months before the current term is due to end in September.

Spring elections for mayors in several major cities could make it easier to hold national and local votes on the same day.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is said to consider this combined election a possible option, though it has not traditionally appealed to her centre-right coalition.

Forza Italia and the League favour waiting until autumn, and some members of Meloni’s own party also prefer a later vote.

The timing could also depend on international developments, including conflicts affecting energy costs.

If elections are brought forward, the government would inform Parliament, Meloni would resign, and the president would hold consultations before ending the parliamentary term.

No date has been decided, and the government may delay voting if international matters require it to stay in office.
