Rosatom completes safety-system equipment supply for Kudankulam units 3 and 4
Russia’s Rosatom has completed delivery of safety-system equipment for units 3 and 4 of the Kudankulam nuclear plant in Tamil Nadu, India.
The supply included about 300 items and four sets of computerised subsystems for the two units, which are being built with VVER-1000 reactors.
These systems monitor reactor conditions and trigger protective actions if operations move outside normal limits, helping bring a reactor to a safe state after an accident.
The equipment is divided among separate rooms and power supplies to reduce the risk that one failure disables all safety functions.
The design draws on experience with the same system at Kudankulam’s first two units, which began operating in 2013 and 2017.
Installation and system testing are next, before the equipment is prepared for commissioning and operation; units 3 and 4 remain under construction.

The delivery included about 300 items and four sets of computerised subsystems for each power unit.
The systems monitor operating conditions and can automatically activate safety equipment during an accident.
Installation and testing will take place before the systems are prepared for commissioning.
Units 3 and 4 are under construction and will use VVER-1000 reactors.
