Calls attributed to man killed by police add evidence to São Paulo investigation

Two calls attributed to Gustavo Munis de Santana describe a man on a footbridge in Moema, in southern São Paulo.

In the calls, the caller says the man spoke about suicide and appeared to threaten to jump, but says he did not see a weapon.

Authorities have not confirmed who made the calls, so it is not known whether Gustavo was describing himself while pretending to be someone else.

Police shot and killed Gustavo on October 10 during an encounter in Moema.

Investigators say officers fired 45 shots, 27 of which hit him; the officers said they mistook his cellphone for a gun.

The four officers involved have been removed from operational duties, and investigators have seized the weapons and cellphone and requested body-camera footage.

Police investigations into the shooting are continuing, including a criminal inquiry and a separate military police inquiry.
